Ganglion Cyst Aspiration
Find your specialistA ganglion cyst is a common, benign fluid-filled lump that most often appears around the wrist or hand, although it can occur in other areas.
In some cases, aspiration (draining the fluid) may be an appropriate option — particularly where the cyst is uncomfortable, limiting movement, interfering with function, or causing persistent irritation.
At Solent Specialist Physiotherapy, ganglion aspiration is offered as a specialist procedure where clinically appropriate. This service is only offered by our Upper Limb Specialist Physiotherapist.
What is ganglion aspiration?
Aspiration involves using a sterile needle to remove fluid from the cyst. The aim is to reduce the size of the lump and improve symptoms such as discomfort, pressure, or restriction.
Aspiration is not suitable for every ganglion, and in some cases the cyst may recur over time.
When aspiration may be appropriate
Ganglion aspiration may be considered when:
-
the lump is painful or uncomfortable
-
it interferes with daily activities or sport
-
it restricts movement
-
symptoms have persisted despite time and activity modification
-
the diagnosis is clear and appropriate for aspiration
When aspiration may not be recommended
Aspiration may not be appropriate if:
-
the diagnosis is uncertain
-
the lump is not consistent with a ganglion cyst
-
there are signs of infection, inflammation, or other concerns
-
the cyst is very small or not easily accessible
-
aspiration is unlikely to improve symptoms
Where needed, further investigation or onward referral may be recommended.
What to expect
If aspiration is clinically appropriate, the procedure is carried out using sterile technique.
Your clinician will explain:
-
what the procedure involves
-
expected benefits and limitations
-
possible recurrence
-
aftercare and activity guidance
You will also be advised on what to monitor afterwards and when to seek further review.
A note on recurrence
Ganglion cysts can recur after aspiration. This does not necessarily mean anything has gone wrong — recurrence is a recognised feature of this condition.
If symptoms return, further options can be discussed, including reassessment, repeat aspiration in selected cases, or onward referral when appropriate.
Arranging an appointment
If you have a lump that you believe may be a ganglion cyst and would like specialist assessment, you can arrange an appointment with the appropriate clinician.
If you are unsure whether aspiration is suitable, we recommend starting with an assessment so that diagnosis and options can be discussed clearly.
Fees
Ganglion cyst aspiration is priced separately from specialist physiotherapy appointments.
