Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

Rotator cuff tendinopathy is a condition that affects the tendons of the rotator cuff, a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize and move the shoulder.

It typically develops due to repetitive overhead activities, poor shoulder mechanics, or age-related changes in the tendon. This condition causes pain and irritation in the shoulder, particularly when lifting the arm, reaching behind the back, or performing overhead movements.

Symptoms are often felt as a deep ache in the shoulder, sometimes radiating down the upper arm. The pain may worsen with activities such as reaching for objects on a high shelf, putting on a jacket, or lifting heavy items. Many people also experience discomfort when lying on the affected side, making sleep difficult. If left untreated, rotator cuff tendinopathy can lead to weakness, reduced mobility, and difficulty performing everyday tasks.

How Solent Specialist Physiotherapy Can Help Manage Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

Effective management of rotator cuff tendinopathy begins with a thorough assessment to confirm the diagnosis and identify contributing factors such as muscle imbalances, postural issues, or activity-related strain. Our specialist physiotherapists use evidence-based, graded rehabilitation to progressively strengthen the rotator cuff and restore shoulder function while carefully monitoring load tolerance. If conservative management does not provide sufficient relief, we can refer for imaging or administer injection therapy to help reduce inflammation and pain.

What Your Personalised Treatment Plan Will Cover:

1.Comprehensive Assessment – A detailed evaluation of shoulder movement, strength, and posture to determine the cause of symptoms.

2.Pain Management Strategies – Advice on modifying activities to reduce strain on the tendon, alongside hands-on treatments if appropriate.

3.Graded Rehabilitation Programme – A progressive exercise plan focused on improving tendon loading capacity, starting with controlled movements and gradually incorporating resistance and functional strengthening.

4.Postural and Movement Correction – Addressing biomechanics to reduce unnecessary stress on the shoulder.

5.Plyometric and Sport-Specific Exercises – If required, gradual reintroduction of high-load or overhead activities to safely return to work or sport.

6.Injection Therapy (If Necessary) – If conservative treatment options have been fully explored without sufficient progress, ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections may be considered.

7.Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustments – Regular reassessment to ensure optimal progress and adapt the rehabilitation programme as needed.

Our goal is to provide you with an effective, structured recovery plan that not only reduces pain but also builds long-term strength and resilience, helping you return to your daily activities with confidence.
