Specialist Hip & Knee Rehabilitation

Imaging Request & Injection Therapy

Victoria Smith is a Hip & Knee Specialist Physiotherapist working at Band 8a level within the NHS, with over 25 years of clinical experience. She qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy in 1999 and is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

Alongside her private practice, Victoria works closely with orthopaedic hip and knee surgeons within complex NHS clinical pathways. Her role involves advanced assessment and diagnosis, interpretation of imaging and specialist postoperative rehabilitation. Orthopaedic consultants also seek her specialist physiotherapy opinion when deciding whether a patient may benefit from further rehabilitation or whether surgery may be the more appropriate next step. Victoria helps patients understand their options and make informed decisions about rehabilitation, injection therapy and whether further investigation or surgical referral may be appropriate.

Patients often seek Victoria’s opinion when symptoms have persisted despite previous treatment, imaging has not been clearly explained, the diagnosis remains uncertain or rehabilitation requires more specialist direction.

Complex Hip & Groin Conditions

Victoria assesses and rehabilitates the full range of hip conditions, with particular expertise in femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, acetabular dysplasia, complex hip and groin pain, gluteal tendinopathy, lateral hip pain and gluteal cuff pathology.

Expert Hip Surgery Rehabilitation

Victoria has extensive experience supporting recovery following hip arthroscopy, total hip replacement, gluteal tendon repair and gluteal cuff reconstruction. Rehabilitation is guided by the procedure performed, tissue-healing requirements, objective strength and each patient’s individual goals.

Her specialist work includes developing postoperative rehabilitation protocols and advising other clinicians on the management of complex hip surgery.

Specialist Knee Assessment & Rehabilitation

Victoria assesses and manages knee osteoarthritis, meniscal injuries, patellofemoral pain, ligament injuries, ACL rehabilitation, tendon-related pain and recovery following knee surgery or knee replacement.

Rehabilitation is tailored to the diagnosis and the demands of everyday life, work or sport rather than relying on a standard exercise programme.

Imaging, Injections & Clinical Decision-Making

Victoria is highly experienced in requesting and interpreting investigations including X-ray, ultrasound and MRI. Imaging findings are considered alongside symptoms and clinical examination so that decisions are based on the complete picture rather than the scan report alone.

She is also qualified in joint injection therapy and can discuss corticosteroid and hyaluronic-acid injections where clinically appropriate. Injection therapy is considered as one part of a wider treatment plan and is used to support, rather than replace, appropriate rehabilitation.

Advanced Clinical Experience

Victoria’s specialist practice extends beyond routine physiotherapy. She works alongside orthopaedic surgeons in the assessment and management of complex hip and knee presentations and contributes to decision-making around imaging, injection therapy, rehabilitation and surgical referral.

She has developed specialist rehabilitation protocols for procedures including hip arthroscopy for FAIS and gluteal cuff reconstruction. She is a co-author of published research examining outcomes following combined total hip replacement with gluteal cuff reconstruction and augmentation and has provided specialist advice to the Fortius Clinic on gluteal cuff rehabilitation.

This experience is particularly valuable for patients whose diagnosis is unclear, whose symptoms have not improved with previous treatment or who require structured rehabilitation following specialist hip or knee surgery.

My Approach to Your Care

Patients often come to see me feeling frustrated, uncertain or worried after symptoms have persisted despite previous treatment. I take time to listen carefully, complete a detailed assessment and explain what I believe is contributing to the problem.

My aim is to provide honest guidance about what is—and is not—likely to help. This may involve rehabilitation, imaging, injection therapy or discussion about an orthopaedic opinion, depending on the diagnosis and your individual circumstances.

I particularly enjoy helping patients move from uncertainty towards a clear understanding of their condition and a structured plan for returning to the movement, work, exercise or sport that matters to them.

Qualifications & Professional Practice

Victoria holds a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy and works at Band 8a specialist level within the NHS alongside her private practice. She is registered with the Health & Care Professions Council and is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

Her additional clinical training includes imaging request and interpretation, joint injection therapy and dry needling. She maintains active involvement in advanced hip and knee pathways, postoperative rehabilitation and collaboration with orthopaedic teams.

Outside the Clinic

Outside work, Victoria enjoys running, cold-water swimming—preferably followed by a wild sauna—and waterskiing during the summer. She also enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with her family.

Remaining active is important to her personally, and she understands how frustrating it can feel when pain interferes with everyday life, exercise or the activities that give life enjoyment.
