What Is Ostenil Tendon?

Ostenil Tendon is a hyaluronic acid treatment designed specifically for tendon-related problems.

It contains sodium hyaluronate and mannitol and is injected around the affected tendon rather than into a joint.

At Solent Specialist Physiotherapy, we use Ostenil Tendon for selected cases of tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.

When Can Ostenil Tendon Be Helpful?

Ostenil Tendon can be a useful option when tennis elbow symptoms are causing pain with gripping, lifting, work, sport or everyday activity.

It may be particularly helpful when symptoms are continuing despite appropriate rehabilitation and someone is looking for a non-steroid injection option.

Your specialist will consider your symptoms, clinical findings, previous treatment and what you would like to get back to before discussing whether Ostenil Tendon is suitable for you.

How Is Ostenil Different From Corticosteroid?

Corticosteroid is an anti-inflammatory medicine, while Ostenil Plus is a hyaluronic-acid injection and does not contain steroid.

The two treatments have different roles. Corticosteroid is often used where inflammation or marked tissue irritability is a significant feature, while Ostenil Plus is designed to supplement the lubricating and shock-absorbing properties of the joint fluid.

Your specialist will talk through the differences and help you decide which option best fits your symptoms and individual circumstances.

Your Ostenil Assessment

Every Ostenil Plus enquiry is reviewed by a physiotherapist with specialist expertise in the joint being treated.

Before your appointment, we will contact you by telephone or video to discuss your symptoms, medical history, medication, previous treatment and any imaging you have already had. This also gives you an opportunity to ask questions before deciding whether you would like to proceed.

An in-person clinical assessment is then completed before treatment. If Ostenil Plus is a suitable option, the injection can usually be given at the same appointment following discussion and consent.

If another injection, further investigation or a different treatment approach is likely to be more helpful, your specialist will explain the options and advise on the next step.

Do I Need Imaging Before an Ostenil Injection?

Not everyone needs new imaging before treatment.

If you already have X-rays or scans, your specialist can review these alongside your symptoms and clinical examination. Further imaging may be recommended when it would help clarify the diagnosis, assess the joint or influence treatment decisions.

Our clinicians provide clinically guided injections. If ultrasound guidance would be preferable for the joint being treated, we will advise you on the appropriate next step.

When Extra Care May Be Needed

Certain medical circumstances may mean that an Ostenil injection needs to be postponed or considered in more detail before treatment.

These include infection within the joint, active infection or broken skin around the injection site, or a known allergy to hyaluronic-acid preparations.

We will also take particular care if you take anticoagulant medication, have a bleeding disorder, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have significant unexplained swelling or symptoms that may need further investigation.

If osteoarthritis is very advanced or joint replacement surgery is already being planned, your specialist will discuss whether Ostenil Plus is likely to be a useful option at that stage.

These circumstances do not always prevent treatment, but they are important for us to know about before an appointment is arranged.

Potential Risks and Side Effects

Most people do not experience a serious complication, but all injections carry some potential risks. These will be discussed with you before treatment.

Temporary pain, stiffness, warmth or swelling can occur after an Ostenil Plus injection, and symptoms may occasionally feel more irritated for a short period before settling.

Bruising or bleeding around the injection site can also occur. Less common complications include a more pronounced inflammatory reaction within the joint, infection, allergic reaction, nerve injury or damage to surrounding structures.

Your specialist will discuss the risks relevant to you and explain what to expect following treatment, including any symptoms that would require medical advice.

What Happens After the Injection?

You will receive individual aftercare advice based on the joint treated, your usual activities and your rehabilitation goals.

A short period of relative rest is generally recommended before walking, exercise and rehabilitation are gradually resumed.

Ostenil Plus does not usually produce an immediate change. Improvement can develop progressively over the following weeks, and the response varies from person to person.

For some people, reducing pain and stiffness can make everyday movement easier and create a useful opportunity to build strength, confidence and activity again.
