What Is Golfer’s Elbow?
Golfer’s elbow, also known as medial elbow tendinopathy, affects the tendons that attach to the inside of the elbow.
It commonly causes pain with gripping, lifting, carrying, gym work, racquet or throwing sports and other activities that place repeated load through the wrist and forearm.
Despite the name, you do not need to play golf to develop it. Symptoms often build gradually following repetitive gripping, wrist movement or a change in work, exercise or activity.

When Can an Injection Help?
Injection therapy may be considered in selected cases where golfer’s elbow remains painful and is significantly affecting gripping, lifting, work, sport or progress with rehabilitation.
At Solent Specialist Physiotherapy, we offer corticosteroid injection and Ostenil Tendon for selected golfer’s elbow presentations.
The two treatments have different roles, so your specialist will consider how long your symptoms have been present, previous treatment, tendon irritability, your rehabilitation progress and what you would like to get back to before discussing which option, if either, may be appropriate.
Which Injection Options Are Available?
Corticosteroid Injection
Corticosteroid is an anti-inflammatory treatment and may be considered where symptoms are particularly painful or irritable and short-term symptom reduction would help with everyday activity or progression of rehabilitation.

Ostenil Tendon
Ostenil Tendon is a non-steroid hyaluronic acid treatment designed specifically for use around tendons.
We use it for selected golfer’s elbow presentations, particularly where symptoms have persisted despite appropriate rehabilitation or where someone would prefer a non-steroid treatment option.
How Do Corticosteroid and Ostenil Tendon Differ?
Corticosteroid and Ostenil Tendon have different roles in the management of golfer’s elbow.
Corticosteroid is an anti-inflammatory treatment and may be considered where pain is particularly irritable or where short-term symptom reduction would help someone progress.
Ostenil Tendon is a non-steroid hyaluronic acid treatment designed for use around tendons and may be considered where symptoms have persisted despite appropriate rehabilitation or where a non-steroid option is preferred.
Your Upper Limb Specialist Physiotherapist will discuss the differences with you and advise which approach, if either, is most appropriate for your presentation.
Do I Need a Scan Before an Injection?
Not usually.
Golfer’s elbow can often be identified from your symptoms and clinical examination.
Ultrasound or MRI may be helpful if the diagnosis is unclear, symptoms are unusual or progress has not been as expected.
If you already have imaging, your specialist can review this alongside your symptoms and examination findings.
